I have a mouth, merely I mustn't speak;
Ears, merely I mustn't hear;
Eyes, only I mustn't run into.

1800, Joseon (Korea). Homesick and orphaned xvi-year-old Seol is living out the ancient curse: "May you live in interesting times." Indentured to the police force bureau, she's been tasked with profitable a well-respected immature inspector with the investigation into the politically charged murder of a noblewoman.

As they delve deeper into the dead woman'due south secrets, Seol forms an unlikely bond of friendship with the inspector. Simply her loyalty is tested when he becomes the prime suspect, and Seol may exist the only 1 capable of discovering what truly happened on the dark of the murder.

But in a state where silence and obedience are valued above all else, curiosity tin be deadly.

June Hur's elegant and haunting debut The Silence of Bones is a encarmine tale perfect for fans of Kerri Maniscalco and Renée Ahdieh.

Start of all, I'd like to give thanks The Fantastic Flight Volume Club for organising this blog tour. Their team has been super helpful by answering all the questions and inquiries so thank you so much! Now, let'southward get into the review.

The book started off a bit dull for me. It isn't the kind of story that instantly captures my attention, though it did outset with a murder case. Notwithstanding, the plot builds upward really well and as I followed Seol in investigating the murder cases, things really beginning to go more interesting and the human relationship between all the characters in this volume started to really complicated. But it's the kind of complicated that one tin still follow through. It felt like I was watching NCIS or Criminal Minds but in Joseon in the year of 1800.

The historical touch really makes information technology more than dramatic and information technology kinda brought me to an aboriginal Korea k-drama scene. The spread of Catholics beliefs was one of the main aspect in this book. The author did a thorough inquiry on this issue and she did not merely highlight it in like certain parts of this book but she emphasized it throughout the entire story. This brings me to some other aspect that I like most this book, which is the focus.

The Silence of Basic doesn't simply focus on Catholics, but also on hierarchy and ability, feminism and siblings relationship. All of these aspects were emphasized throughout the story consistently. I think being consistent would be one of this debut novel's strength. The author knew what she was doing and she was very practiced at manipulating the information and the materials she had.

I really like the master grapheme, Seol. She is a very indecisive teenage girl yet she is very persistent, assuming and peculiar. The fashion she thinks and she carries herself in the story was really interesting. However, every bit we follow her POV in the book, the plot twist wasn't very surprising for me. The plot did bring in the suspense effects but the twist wasn't that strong. Also, the ending fabricated me tear up then desperately. (Hint: There'due south a letter involved)

June Hur really has her ways with words. Information technology's very poetic at sure parts of the book. I can't wait for her future works considering I call up her writing style will definitely go better and more than intriguing to read!

"I am a girl who knows how to handle an arrow steady. Don't blame me for your disability to shoot one properly. "
– June Hur, The Silence of Bones

"The expressionless are gone, nonetheless we live in their shadows."
– June Hur, The Silence of Basic

"There is one lesson all who enter the capital will learn: evil comes from the unfulfilled need for significance."
– June Hur, The Silence of Bones

"Sometimes nosotros must cease feeling, he had once said, when nosotros had lost our way in the rain, and call up instead."
